Jon’s Bio

I am a visual artist, and an art teacher as well. I love creating and sharing what I love with others, and through my art I can connect with and then translate the things that are most important to me. I have a deep respect and appreciation for the natural world, and I find tremendous personal inspiration for my work through my observations and experiences within it. I grew up among gardens and woodlands, and their landscapes just became a part of me.
Jonathan Kane_Cherries_Pastel [4340]I am captivated by the hidden power of color, shape, and form, and while finding such a richness of each in the natural world, I am impressed with the significance of even the simplest of things. Always amazed that even a tiny seed planted in the ground can grow into something, it becomes a moment to capture and to celebrate. Interpreted through paintings and drawings, my themes depict landscapes and botanical subjects. Yet I also love to include a variety of imagery discovered through my travels. I work often in pastel and paint, but also with pencils, woodcuts, and whatever medium seems most appropriate to the piece.

Through my artwork I try to convey a feeling of presence, and in that way maybe to personally connect with objects and the environment even more closely, strengthening the total aesthetic experience. It is also in my nature to try to create a permanence, or a lasting memory connection, with things that are important to me. A painting captures and holds onto a moment long after the moment has passed, and my goal is to do just that as I explore and then translate my sketches and photographs into paintings.

Along with my personal artwork, I also create work through individual commissions. I offer private and small group lessons for youth and adult students as well. Please do contact me if you have questions or are interested in talking about art.
